The Scottish Highlands

The Kilt Rock sea cliffs near Staffin are said to resemble a kilt, with vertical basalt columns forming the pleats. The layers of white dolerite that run through the rocky cliffs a bit like the pattern you find in a kilt. The name Staffin (Stafainn) comes from the word for pillars. For the sea-going Scandinavians who settled here in the 10th century this would have been a memorable landmark.
